hi everyone.  I'm sure many have asked this in the past.  How much play should my prop shaft have?  I've got through quite a few with new tubes (tufnol I think) and yet the shaft play seems to increase quite quickly.  Mine is now over 1mm play at the propellor.  I have an aquadrive coupling.  Any thoughts?

Not and expert but 1mm does seem like more play than is ideal, as you have an aqua-drive it shouldn’t be the engine causing it.  It could be the shaft is slightly bent or the prop is not completely balanced, either of these could cause excessive wear.

I am sure that others here will have a view on this.

Hi you have the problem I had. And have fixed, thou you might not want to go to the extremes I have gone to. I have some picture on the site and a bit about changing stern tubes

The problem is lubrication. I recommend you fit a Tides Marine shaft seal as these have a water feed from the engine driven cooling pump. That will fix the lubrication I also recommend you then change the Tufnol bearing for a cutlass bearing. You might find a problem with getting on the right size.  I can get you the seal and I can make you a bearing to suit. You will also find the Tufnol has worn the shaft; the Tides marine seal will require a good quality surface finish. Feel free to phone me on 07764 188815

oh heck that sounds pricey!  I'm thinking I might leave it for another season.  There's no water ingress (beyond normal) and I'm suffering no abnormal vibration.  I guess as long as the shaft is secure I could delay couldn't I?

I'm really grateful for your response.

Hi, I agree with St paddy, I installed a deep sea seal with cutlass with the new engine Jan 2005 5 years and over 700 hours engine running it's still going strong, no play on the cutlass whatever. Alan

Yes you  can delay it. Watch the Tufnol bearing. make sure it can not spin. if that happens it will act as a bearing with your stern tube as the outer part. It will wear you tube and make it hard to fit the cutlass bearing in the future.  A tides marine seal is 90.00 to 100.00  cutleaass about 30.00
if your shaft is worn then 200 ish (all ish prices)  I welded my shaft and remachined it (again)
