If anyone has fitted a new Z Spars mast recently could you give me some advice on the following points?
1. What mast section did you use.
2. How did you arrange the fitting of the mast heel to the hull.
3. Aproximately how much should I expect to pay for a Z Spar mast fitted with new standing rigging.

John McCann had a new Z Spars mast recently so he would be a good point of contact. John's details are in the Handbook under Cosantes.

Why would a mast require replacement? Corrosion? Fatigue?

Masts need to be replaced when corrosion under fittings gets so bad that there is not enough 'meat' to hold the rivets. Old style masts had their turning blocks fixed to them and this is the area where corrosion tends to occur - new masts make use of deck rings thus there are fewer places for corrosion to happen.
When your rigger refuses to make any new holes in the mast is when it needs to be replaced!
