Thank you for your experience. I am hoping to get my 'car ' fixed by the local stainless steel metal worker. Failing that I will act on what you say.

 I think I had the original set up which gave no mechanical advantage at all.
 I improved it a bit by lashing small turning blocks at the outboard ends of the track,  I think this gives me 2:1?
 It sounds dreadful but it actually looks fairly neat.  Whilst not being perfect it has the virtue of being cheap.

Yes still have mine in the garage attached to the track if you want it. I live near Gatwick and keep the boat in Chichester Harbour. You could collect from either if convenient for you.
