I have recently acquired a Contessa 32 "Western Light".  I am trying to insure her.  I do a lot of my sailing single handed.  I noticed an advert in Yachting Monthly from Haven Knox Johnson.  Gave them all the necessary details and they said they would get back to me with a quote.  They did come back to me but not with a quote.  They said their underwriters declined to quote because I sail single handed.  How ironic!!  A company trading under the name of probably the greatest single handed sailor ever who sailed round the world can't insure me to sail across the North Sea!!!Ermm

Hi and welcome to the club, I hope you enjoy your Contessa.   I have not seen Western Light for a number of years but do recall her in the Solent.

As for insurance it is worth having a chat with Desmond Cheers insurance brokers who do a discounted rate for Co32 association members.  I had to make a claim on my insurance via them last year (and ultimatly with HKJ) and Tim cheers was most helpfull in the process of sorting it out and getting the repair paid in full.

Another specialist broker that deals a lot with single and short-handed racing sailors is Fastnet Insurance so it may be worth giving them a call.

Hope this helps a bit,

I have found Bluefin (Bishop Skinner) very responsive and knowledgeable.
RYA and RNLI discounts.
My current policy covers single handed provided it is not in excess of 24 hours, which suits me.
They have always come up with adjustments as requested.

Friends of mine were in the same position, so they took a picture of the ships crew and emailed it on to their insurance company.

Big Ted, Little Ted and the ships cat (live one, very smelly at times)

They had no response to the crew were ineffective so perhaps its a good way to go.

Thanks very much for all the replies to my insurance post.  I have now got a very good deal from Towergate Insurance.
Hoping to set sail this weekend for Scandinavia.

I see you are sorted anyway, but Pantaenius puts no restriction on single/short handed sailing on our "normal" cruising range and in the past when we/John have/has been further afield, I don't remember any difficulty with them. Janet

Can I ask if anyone has sorted this single handed problem.  Will any insurance company cover us while out for over 24 hours and over 200 miles out.
