Hi all,

To meet Cat 1 racing regs I need to fit a secondary manual bilge pump that can be operated from inside the boat and the suggestion from Jeremy is that this should be fitted in the locker just forward of the galley with the pipework running around the galley and then following the route of the existing pipe through the engine bay.  Having looked at the boat and the routing of the pipes it’s is going to be a real PITA job.

Is there a good reason why I can not fit a diverter valve to the Lavac Pump and run a pipe down into the bilge from there???   Seems like a much easier solution to me…

Afrita has a second manual bilge pump fitted where Jeremy recommends but the pipe runs up following the half bulkhead and comes out of the topsides beneath beneath the water tank filler.  Our electric bilge pump shares the same outlet.

The only problem I can see with using the Lavac lump is getting the pipe past the water tank into the sump without taking a very circuitous route.  That said, and depending on the rules, if it's a real emergency spare it can maybe just lead to the bilge beneath the heads - though you'd need to be quite flooded for it to do any good there.

Hi

If you Tee into the heads pump you need make sure your have an anti syphon valve in the loop behnd the locker or you could easily get sunk when away from the boat. I would not do it on mine.

What about the l;ocker under the the chart table seat and a wandering pick uo hose

For the same reasons some time ago I connected up my lavac pump via a 3-way valve and have had no trouble. Pipe is routed up thro the JR locker and runs neatly forward in the bottom of the port seat locker straight thro the bulkhead onto the 3 way valve. Main difficulty was getting good pipe connections onto the 3-way valve. With 2 good NRV's in the Henderson pump backflow is unlikely. Also the 3-way valve is always left on lavac and the seacock should be closed on leaving. Flowrate is of course less than the Whale Gusher 2, therefore I have also got a Whale Urchin in the JR locker with a coiled hose to reach the cockpit. So I feel quite well off for bilge pumps especially with my permanently installed electric Whale Orca and another old walk-about electric pump which I can plug in. (good for emptying the water tank).
