We want to move our life raft from the starboard quarter outside the pulpit to the position many people use forward of the mast and behind the forward hatch.

Any advice on exactly where and how to fit the support brackets (e.g. self tapping screws into the fibre glass, or through bolts?), whether to mount the life raft fore and aft or transversely, and where to put the inflatable dinghy, which lives in that spot at the moment?

Ours is mounted on the coachroof on the port side just aft of the mast, using four 10mm through bolts. That is probably grossly overdoing it but as it weighs 35 kg, there is no way I'd trust self tapping screws!

If I had been the one to fit it, I'd probably have put it on the starboard side so it wasn't on the same side as the spinnaker pole.

I wouldn't put it forward of the mast because I think it would catch our genoa sheets, just like our dinghy does when we put it there. Also, forward of the mast might not be the place you want to be if you ever need to deploy said raft.
